Running nipple (noun) A tool with a steel loop at one end, a male threaded end (pin) at the other end, and a swivel in the middle. The tool is used for lowering (i.e., "running") sections of drill pipe, tubing, or pump column pipe into, or out of, a well. Also termed hoisting plug.
