rack 1. (noun) The horizontal rails that are attached to the derrick at the monkey board. The rack holds the top end of the drill pipe in place when it is placed in the derrick.
2. (verb) To place the drill pipe in the derrick (e.g., to rack the pipe).
3. (noun) The steel framework at a drilling location that is used to lay out the drill pipe just prior to its use.
