for week of Jan 2, 2006:
Orange peel
1. (noun) A fishing tool that consists of a piece of casing or tubing with vertical cuts around the base. These cuts result in a series of "fingers" that are folded inward and trap small objects or cobbles when the tool is set on bottom and turned.
2. (verb) To make a series of vertical cuts at the base of a joint of casing, for the purpose of fishing or other specialty operation. Drillers will sometimes orange peel the base of surface casing (with the "fingers" folded outward) prior to installation, to prevent the flow of cement grout around the base of the surface casing, when the surface casing is cemented in place.
