Cable tool (noun) The drilling method involving use of a cable tool drilling rig, which advances the borehole by breaking up the strata with a heavy bit that is suspended from a cable in the borehole. The reciprocal motion of the cable provides energy at the bit, and the cuttings are periodically bailed out of the borehole.
